About the trip

The route takes us to various beautiful lodges, between high mountain peaks, through deep valleys and along beautiful gorges, along a choice of branch-marked trails that give the safest passage, with experienced tour leaders who know this is one tour you’ll never forget.

The staffed lodges offer food and warmth, and Olavsbu, the self-service cabin in the heart of Jotunheimen, gives us the freedom to spend the first evening doing as we please.

Those who are fit, know their mountain-skiing kit, and are used to carrying a rucksack on long mountain trips, are welcome to sign up.

It’s an opportunity to enjoy a few days skiing, safe in the knowledge you will be well looked after at all times.

Itinerary

Day 1 Meet at Tyin – snow vehicle to Fondsbu lodge 1,061 m.a.s.l.

We meet at Tyin at 15:00. From Tyin we take a snow vehicle all the way to Fondsbu lodge (departing at 15.15), about 21 km.

Day 2 Fondsbu to Gjendebu

The tour starts with a ski trip north to Gjendebu. The route goes from Bygdin, up Høystakka, and across to Lake Gjende. Gjendebu is located at the northern end of the lake.

Day 3 Gjendebu to Olavsbu

After breakfast and preparing lunch and hot drinks, the group continues further into the mountains. The destination is the self-service cabin Olavsbu. The route follows the marked trail via Mjølkedalsvatnet and crosses the highest point of the day at approx. 1,520 m.

Dinner is prepared individually at the cabin.

Day 4 Olavsbu to Skogadalsbøen

Breakfast is taken from the cabin’s provisions. The route descends several hundred meters to Skogadalsbøen, another cabin located remotely in the mountains. The stage offers views toward the Hurrungane mountain range. The hosts at Skogadalsbøen will welcome the group.

Day 5 Skogadalsbøen to Fondsbu

An early start is necessary due to the long stage. The route goes up Uradalen to Uradalsbandet (approx. 1,420 m), with views of Uranostind (2,157 m) to the north. The descent continues via Uradalsvatnet and through varied terrain back to Fondsbu.

Dinner is served at Fondsbu in the evening.

Day 6 Fondsbu - Tyin, about 21 km/6 hours

After breakfast we set off to Tyin. Those wanting transportation from Tyin must book it directly (transport is not included in the package). If conditions are good we’ll ski over the frozen lake, or otherwise follow the snow vehicle tracks. Skiing around or over Tyin lake is quite demanding but it certainly is beautiful. It's like being on a wide open plain and you quickly feel how exposed you are to the wind.

We say our goodbyes at Tyin at about 16:00.

Grading of guided tours: demanding

The mountains are beautiful but unpredictable in winter. Even the easiest of skiing trips can become very demanding in bad weather and difficult conditions. Having the right and proper equipment will often make these trips the most memorable, inspiring good camaraderie and stories to be told. In the mountains, you will go off-piste and need to be prepared to tread your own trails. Pack your rucksack in a proper and smart manner.

Equipment

For safety reasons, your rucksack must contain the right, important clothing and equipment. We refer you to our winter packing list.
It is compulsory that all participants on our winter tours bring their own sleeping bag, sleeping mat, survival shelter/emergency bivy and shovel. nordic mountain skis and boots are required on all our mountain ski tours.
Ski skins and snow goggles (storm goggles) are very useful on our winter tours.
Read more tips about ski skins and ski wax.

You can use your sleeping-bag liner in the cabin/lodge beds. Sleeping bags cannot be used.

The tour package includes

The tour package includes: accommodation, tour guides, all meals (breakfast, lunch / thermos and usually three-course dinner), with the exception of: first day only dinner, last day only breakfast + lunch / thermos.

Necessary special diet: Please give notice when you book your tour!
