Norway’s mountains are beautiful in the summer, but even the easiest hike can be challenging if the weather turns; winds, rain and snow are possible. With proper equipment it is often these trips you remember best with their comradeship and memorable stories. Pack your backpack wisely.

Itinerary

Day 1 Meet at Gjendesheim lodge (989m)
Participants and tour guides meet at Gjendesheim no later than 17:00.

Day 2–Gjendesheim – Glitterheim lodge (1,386m), about 21 km/7 hours
After breakfast, we pack our rucksacks and get ready for today’s hike to Glitterheim lodge. The varied route takes us past pretty lakes and rivers, with constant views of mountain peaks before descending to the Glitterheim lodge.

Day 3 Stay at Glitterheim lodge
Day trip to Glittertind (2,454m), about a 12 km round trip
We can relax a little longer at breakfast today. Today's destination is Glittertind, Norway's second highest mountain.  On the way up, we look across Steinbuvatnet lake – an excellent place to take a dip on the way back down. We hope for a clear view from the top and an enjoyable trip down the snowy slope back to the lake.

A summer evening spent outdoors around Glitterheim lodge is a wonderful end to a great day's hiking.

Day 4 Glitterheim – Spiterstulen lodge (1,100m), about 16 km/5 hours
We enjoy breakfast and make a good packed lunch before heading over Skautflya mountain. We’ll ascend Vesleglupen mountain, about 1,660 metres above sea level, then hike over Skautflya, before descending down to Spiterstulen lodge. The lodge is situated in Visdalen valley between the two highest peaks in Norway – Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind.

Day 5 Spiterstulen – Leirvassbu lodge (1,400m), about 14 km/5 hours
Visdalen valley is long, beautiful and surrounded by 2,000-metre-high mountains and glaciers. If there’s time before dinner, or the evening is long and light, and your legs are up to it, you can hike up Kyrkja mountain (2,032m) – an 8-km round trip from Leirvassbu lodge.

Day 6 Leirvassbu – Gjendebu lodge (990m), about 18 km/6 hours
Today’s trip is along the Langvatnet lake, down Storådalen valley to the blue-green Gjende lake. If it's hot, there are plenty of places to cool down along the way. We can relax and do as we please before dinner is served sometime after six o’clock.

Day 7 Gjendebu – Memurubu lodge (1,000m) via Bukkelægeret, about 13 km/5-6 hours
We start the day hiking along Gjende lake before climbing straight up Bukkelægeret mountain after about 4 km. This is a steep and lofty section of the trip, and we follow the T-marked trail with ropes to assist us in some sections. The lush, steep mountainside from Gjende lake, at 990 metres, and up to 1,460 metres, is widely known for its rich flora – with a multitude of colourful plants and flowers.  Once at the top, we follow the Memurutunga plateau in beautiful terrain, with spectacular views in all directions, towards the ridge down to Memurubu lodge. This may well be one of the finest T-marked trails in Jotunheimen.  We spend another evening beside Gjende lake and the beautiful pastures around Memurubu lodge.

Day 8 Memurubu – Gjendesheim lodge (990m) via Besseggen ridge, about 14 km/6 hours
The final day of our tour has arrived and we’re ready to hike over Besseggen ridge, an epic ridge with spectacular views. After hiking over Veslefjell mountain, the descent to our destination lies ahead of us.

Today there are 2 alternatives to walking the Besseggen ridge: hike along Gjende lake or take the boat.

Once back at Gjendesheim lodge at about 17.00, the round trip is complete and we wish each other a safe journey home.

Please note:

  1. Participants who wish to take the boat to Gjendesheim lodge, pay for it themselves.
  2. The program is subject to alteration.

All time calculations are made from an average speed of approximately 3 km/h. Please note that breaks, weather and trail conditions, etc. are not included in estimated hike times.

We recommend: Spending an extra night at Gjendesheim lodge to reflect on the journey, before heading home or continuing your journey.
