Welcome to Snøheim
Snøhetta is the highest peak on the Dovrefjell mountain plateau. Historically, it was believed to be the highest mountain in Norway. The Snøhetta massif is a prominent feature in the landscape and a central destination for hiking in the area during the summer season.
Practical information
Facilities
Located just below Snøhetta, Reinheim Turisthytte was built by The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) in 1952. The Army then took it over related to the developement of of Hjerkinn shooting field in 1958. The lodge then changed name to Snøheim. In the autumn of 2007 DNT Oslo og Omegn got Snøheim back from the Army. Today Snøheim is a DNT lodge with 80 bunks, in roms with two and four bunks.
Location
In addition to the fact that Snøheim has over 10 peaks at over 2000 masl nearby, the area is also very rich in fishing waters.
If you are extra lucky, you will also see the musk ox.
Follow these tips when traveling in mountainous areas with wild reindeer:
- Follow marked trails
- Stay still if you see wild reindeer, so that they can move away undisturbed
- Use binoculars and keep your distance
- Keep dogs on a leash
- Stay low in the terrain and move in the wind so that the animals do not get the smell from you
- Keep an eye on the dog and follow the rules on leashing
