Three-day round skiing trip in Skarvheimen
This triangle takes you through varied terrain with fantastic views of Hallingskarvet ridge, the mountains Sankt Pål and Finsenuten, and Hardangerjøkulen glacier.
About the trip
The round trip in Skarvheimen is a spring favourite; from Finse with a night at Geiterygghytta (staffed lodge) and Hallingskeid (self-service cabin). Start by taking the morning train from Oslo or Bergen. A few hours on a train takes you up 1,200 metres above sea level, with enough time to ski to Geiterygghytta lodge that day.
Day 1 Finsehytta to Geiterygghytta
Distance through Kyrkjedøri: 19,7 km
Distance over Omnsbreen: 16,6 km
Choose between two routes; around Omnsbreen glacier and Omnsvatnet lake or through Kyrkjedøri. Choose your route based on the forecast and your preference. If the weather is poor, you should ski via Omnsvatnet lake, as it is the easier route and is less prone to snowdrifts and avalanches. If the weather is ok, skiing via Kyrkjedøri is just as good an option.
Day 2 Geiterygghytta to Hallingskeid
Distance: 23 km
Ski from Geiterygghytta lodge to the self-service cabin Hallingskeid the following day. This is a long leg, but offers lots of great experiences. The first part of the skiing trip is in easy terrain and across three large lakes; Geiteryggvatnet, Omnsvatnet and Svartavatnet.
Day 3 Hallingskeid to Finsehytta
Distance: 18 km
Follow the trail marked by branches from Hallingskeid back to Finsehytta lodge, and ski along the Bergen Railway, across Fagervatnet lake and finally across Finsevatnet lake to the lodge.
We highly recommend Geiterygghytta lodge if you’re looking for a different way to celebrate Constitution Day. The lodge has a tradition of hosting a 17 May parade, followed by a lunch outdoors and an evening banquet. Constitution Day is also celebrated at Finse, where the parade goes to Hardangerjøkulen glacier.
