Winter

In winter, the route starts from the parking lot at Furulund. From there, it is approximately 8 km on skis along a marked winter trail (twigged/staked trail).

Driving from Oslo (Two Options)

1. Over Venabygdsfjellet: Drive to Lillehammer and Ringebu, then cross the Venabygdsfjellet mountain pass. Descend to Enden and continue toward Folldal. Pass the Atnasjø Café and park in the small parking lot just past Nesset (look for the "P- Bjørnhollia" sign near the entrance to Blåfjellia). This is about a two-hour drive from Lillehammer.

NB! Venabygdsfjellet pass can close quickly due to winter weather. Call 175 (Vegvesen) to check road conditions.

2. Via Østerdalen: Drive to Elverum and continue north through the Østerdalen valley, passing Koppang and Atna. From Atna, drive toward Atndalen/Folldal, pass the Atnasjø Café, and park at Furulund just past Nesset farm.

Driving or Public Transport from Trondheim

  • By Car: Drive to Hjerkinn, continue to Folldal, and then head down Atndalen toward Ringebu. Pass the Straumbu parking lot and continue to the parking area at Furulund.
  • By Public Transport: Take the train to Koppang and catch a connecting bus to Furulund, or take the train to Hjerkinn and catch a bus via Folldal to Furulund.

Ski Route from Furulund

The winter trail starts at the parking lot, leads down through the courtyard at Furulund farm, crosses the frozen lake Atnsjøen, and climbs through the forest up to Bjørnhollia.

Public Transport Notes for Winter & Easter

  • Venabygdsfjellet: There is no scheduled bus service over the Venabygdsfjellet pass during the winter.
  • Easter Travel in Østerdalen: Public transport in Østerdalen can be limited during Easter as many regional bus routes are cancelled.
  • Alternative Route via Mysusæter: A reliable alternative is starting from Mysusæter. Take the train to Otta, then the bus to Mysusæter. Ski from Mysusæter via Rondvassbu to Bjørnhollia, or take the direct winter route to Bjørnhollia (approximately 5 hours).

Be considerate of the wild reindeer on a trip

In many mountain areas in southern Norway, you can encounter wild reindeer. Both hikers and wild reindeer love to hike, and we often use the same areas. But the wild reindeer are vulnerable to disturbances and need peace. It is therefore important that we pay attention when we are on a trip.
