Self-Service Quarters to Close Permanently After Easter 2026
To improve living conditions for the wild reindeer in Rondane, the Ministry of Climate and Environment has adopted a regional action plan. As part of this plan, the self-service quarters at Grimsdalshytta, Rondvassbu, and Bjørnhollia will permanently close after Easter 2026. This measure is implemented to protect the wild reindeer during highly vulnerable periods, including late autumn, midwinter, and the spring calving season.
SAGA is DNT's long-haul route from Lillehammer to Snøhetta. 220 km over Ringebufjellet, through Rondane and Dovrefjell. All on the Norwegian Trekking Association's marked trails, with accommodation in serviced and self-service cabins.
Wild Reindeer Territory – Please Show Consideration
When visiting Rondvassbu, you are entering a wild reindeer habitat. Wild reindeer in Norway are threatened, largely because cabins, roads, and power facilities have fragmented and reduced their natural habitats. Visitors in these mountain areas can also have a negative impact on the animals.
