Three Routes to the Summit

For those wishing to experience Gaustatoppen from different sides, the three classic routes start from Stavsro, Svineroi, and Selstali.

These three hikes offer different scenery, views, and terrain profiles. Whether you are looking for an accessible family hike, a quieter nature experience, or a more demanding mountain challenge, Gaustatoppen offers options for various skill levels.

Hiking to Gaustatoppen from Stavsro

The route from Stavsro is the most popular and accessible trail to Gaustatoppen. The trailhead is located high up, providing quick access to the open high mountain terrain. The trail is clearly marked and well-maintained, with a steady incline all the way to the summit.

As you ascend, the landscape opens up to views of plateaus, mountains, and lakes. This is a suitable choice for those looking for a classic summit hike with panoramic views without highly technical sections.

Gaustatoppen via Svineroi

The route from Svineroi offers a quieter and more varied experience. The hike begins in vegetated terrain through a valley and along historic tracks, before the landscape gradually transitions into rocky mountain terrain.

This route is generally less crowded than the Stavsro alternative, offering more solitude. Although the hike is slightly shorter, it features distinct contrasts between the green lower surroundings and the barren mountain landscape higher up.

Selstali – The Most Demanding Route to Gaustatoppen

For experienced hikers, the Selstali route is the most challenging of the three options. It features steeper sections and uneven terrain, requiring good balance and mountain experience.

In return, the route offers a more dramatic landscape. You hike close to the mountain face with continuous views along the way. Selstali is best suited for those seeking a physical challenge and a less developed trail experience.

Summary

All three hikes conclude with panoramic views from the summit of Gaustatoppen. On a clear day, approximately one-sixth of Norway is visible, stretching from mountain ranges in the south to the horizon. These three routes showcase different facets of the nature, terrain, and environment surrounding Gaustatoppen.
