The cabin visit from A to Z

Most of DNT's cabins are self-service (with provisions) and no-service cabins (without provisions). Here you can see how to use these cabins.

Planning

Planning is an important part of the trip. Go to UT.no and find a hiking area, hiking suggestions and cabins that tempt you. Get a map of the area and a DNT key. Pack your backpack and go!

DNT's cabin booking provides a quick overview of which cabins have available beds in your chosen time period. There are still some of the DNT cabins that cannot be booked here. These cabins have more information on the individual cabin's website on ut.no.

Key

The vast majority of the cabins that do not have a host are locked with DNT's standard key. Therefore, it is a good rule of thumb to always have this little key in your backpack when you go on a trip. Members can obtain the key for a deposit of NOK 100.

Where can I get the DNT key?

Buy the key in our online store. You can also buy the key via our local tourist associations/hiking associations, as well as some tourist offices and shops. On the website of the DNT store, you will find a list of outlets around Norway. In addition, all serviced DNT cabins have keys available.

Heating of the cabins

After you have made it safely into the cabin, it is time to fire up the stove. Place two small split logs on each side in the oven with the split side in. Fill with pieces of newspaper, brittle pieces of timber and kindling. Place small firewood criss-cross and finish with a larger log on top. You're guaranteed to have a fire on the first try!

Drying

You can get wet after a day outside, and it is usually well arranged for drying clothes and shoes by the oven. Hang up the wet clothes and put them on dry as soon as possible.

Protocol

While the cabin is getting warm, you can sign the protocol with your name, membership number and some other information. This also applies even if you have booked a place online. You are not entitled to a bed until this is done.

Lights

Some cabins have regular electricity or solar power, but in the vast majority of cabins, candles or kerosene lamps apply. Remember to check that the candles are well placed in the candlestick. Also make sure that you do not spill lamp oil when you refill the paraffin lamp.

Food storage

All self-catering cabins have food storage. Here you can pick up everything you need, from crispbread and oatmeal to bagged soups and canned food. You will find information about payment for the food you use at the cabin. You pay by filling out a form or with your mobile phone. No unmanned cabins have food storage, so you have to bring all the food yourself.

Water

At the cabin you will find information about where the nearest water source is. In winter, you often have to melt snow. Both snow melting and hot water are often heated on the wood-burning stove, tthat savesg the gas for cooking. Always empty the water when you leave the cabin so that we avoid any frost or stale water for the next guest.

Cooking

Propane appliances for cooking are the standard in the cabins. Before you can light it, you need to tilt this switch to the "open" position. Remember to tilt it back when you're done cooking.

Dinner

This is the highlight of the evening, regardless of whether you eat steak or pancakes from the food storage. Remember to take your time with your meal. And a piece of chocolate afterwards.

Sleeping

Nothing is like crawling into bed after a long day in the mountains. Remember to bring either a sheet bag or a small sleeping bag with you on the cabin trip. Show respect for those who want to go to bed early. Then they hopefully show respect for those who want to sleep late the next morning. A headlamp is a good tip if you want to read in bed.

Toilet

It is the outdoor toilet that applies to the DNT cabins. Remember to use the peat or bark to sprinkle over what you have left behind.

Payment

Please note that the payment solutions at the cabins will vary in the different DNT member associations. Most often, you pay for a cabin when you pre-book. At some cabins, you fill out a payment form that is put in a locked box/safe at the cabin. You will then receive an invoice by e-mail/SMS/post. At some cabins, you can pay with the DNT HYTTEBETALING app or Vipps. Also remember to pay for the food you take out from the food storage at a self-service cabin.

Washing

Both cutlery, plates, countertops and floors must be washed before you leave the cabin. Leave the cabin in a slightly better condition than when you arrived.

Remember to do the dishes!

This was the guide to our self-service and no-service cabins. If you stay in staffed ldoges, you will come to a heated cabin. Then you don't have to think about much other than enjoying yourself as much as possible.
