As a member, you get access to DNT's standard key, which can be used at many of DNT's cabins. For many members, the DNT key is the most important member benefit.

The vast majority of the cabins that do not have a host are locked with DNT's standard key. Therefore, it is a good rule of thumb to always have this little key in your backpack when you go on a trip.
If you are a member of DNT, you can deposit the key and keep it as long as you have a valid paid membership. Buy the DNT key via your local member association or in dntbutikken.no
Note that there are some cabins in the DNT system that are locked with a special key. These are most often destination cabins suitable for company or other special conditions. More information about the cabins, the key and opening hours can be found under each cabin at Ut.no.
There are a lot of mismanufactured DNT keys that do not fit all DNT locks. Therefore, check if you have such an incorrectly manufactured key before you go on a trip. The top key is incorrectly manufactured and has a notch at the front (on the beard). This type of incorrectly manufactured key can either be exchanged in one of our Hiking Centers or a new one can be ordered in the DNT store. If you are handy and have access to a sander, it is also possible to grind away the incorrectly molded notch that is shown at the end of the top key here. DNT apologizes for the inconvenience this causes.
