What are summer bridges?
Summer bridges are temporary bridges that are laid out every summer when it's safe to hike, usually laid out when the staffed cabins open for the summer season, typically from early July to late September.
Weather conditions such as snow and flooding can affect when the bridges are laid out and taken in. Always check the latest status on your hike on UT.no.
These are the DNT cabins
DNT has cabins for all kinds of people and trips! We have serviced cabins where you are served food, self-service cabins with food storage and unserviced cabins where you bring your own food.
As a general rule, the summer bridges must be laid out when the serviced cabins open. They will be taken in when the cabins close for the season. However, there may be exceptions due to challenges related to travel conditions early and late in the season.
Hiking in early or late summer
If you plan a trip early or late in the summer season, you may risk that the bridges are not in place or that they are taken in for the season. This can make it challenging to cross some of the rivers.
Check opening hours
Always remember to check the opening hours of the serviced cabins where you plan your trip. And take a look at the map to see if there are marked river crossings and bridges where you are going to walk.

There are many hundreds of summer bridges, so this is an important and extensive work. Much of the work is done with the help of significant volunteer efforts. So send a warm thought to the enthusiasts in DNT the next time you cross a bridge in the mountains!
