With a dog at the DNT cabins
DNT aims to make outdoor life accessible to everyone — including those who want to bring their four-legged friends. We are continuously working to improve facilities for dogs at DNT cabins, but the offer varies between cabins and member associations.
Staffed DNT cabins
It is possible to bring dogs to the vast majority of DNT's serviced cabins.
General rules:
- Always check with the host where your dog can stay
- Dogs are not allowed in living rooms, dining areas, or bedrooms
- Most staffed cabins offer dog cages in designated rooms
- Solutions vary depending on the size and layout of the cabin
Self- and noservice cabins
Many self-service and no-service cabins also offer solutions for dogs. However, the level of facilitation varies.
Dog Room
- A heated room where both you and your dog can stay overnight. This is often a separate room with its own entrance, or in some cases a small standalone cabin.
Cage in a Separate Room
- A crate in an unheated room reserved for dogs only. Owners cannot sleep here.
Cages in Outbuildings
- Cages located in sheds or outbuildings (often used for firewood or equipment). These are unheated, and owners cannot stay with their dogs.
No Facilities
- Some cabins do not allow dogs indoors. In these cases, dogs must stay outside overnight.
Guide dogs and service dogs
Guide dogs and officially approved service dogs have the legal right to accompany their handler in all DNT cabins, in accordance with Norwegian law (the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act).
They are allowed in all areas where the handler has access, including:
- Common rooms
- Bedrooms
- Other shared facilities
This ensures equal access to outdoor experiences for people with disabilities.
Overview of cabins adapted for dogs
In total, we have over 300 cabins that are open for dogs to stay overnight. Well over 100 of these have their own dog room where dog and owner can sleep together.
Tips for hiking in the norwegian mountains with a dog
Many hikers bring their loyal four-legged companions into the beautiful mountains. This is something both owner and dog value and the joy of having your best friend with you on a trip creates many magical moments.
Les videreVariation among member associations
DNT has over 600 cabins across Norway, managed by local member associations. Each association is responsible for its own cabins and guidelines.
- We understand that many people have questions about bringing a dog on a trip to DNT cabins and that it is important to many. We are working to ensure that all cabins have an offer for dogs. At the same time, we must take into account people with allergies so that no one is excluded from spending the night in our cabins, says cabin and route manager at DNT, Torgeir Negaard Berg.
Facilities for dogs vary depending on:
- Cabin size and layout
- Available space for separate rooms or buildings
- Practical considerations and volunteer resources
At some cabins, it is easy to provide dedicated dog rooms. At others, this is more challenging.
During busy periods, capacity may be limited. If dog facilities are full, your dog may need to stay in an outbuilding or similar space.

Les viderePlan ahead and check UT.no
- We hope to gain an understanding that full facilitation can take time. We have over 600 cabins spread across the country. It is both expensive and laborious to take the necessary measures, but when we build new and rehabilitate cabins, it is often better adapted for dogs so that the offer is continuously improved, says Nergaard Berg.
If you are travelling with a dog, it is important to check conditions in advance.
- Visit UT.no for updated information about each cabin
- Check whether pre-booking is required for dog facilities
- Contact the local member association if you have questions
Facilities for dogs are continuously improving, but full coverage across all cabins will take time.
Member associations
You can also contact the association that runs the cabin you plan to visit for more information. Many of the member associations have their own pages with information about how their cabins are arranged:
- DNT Oslo and the surrounding area
- Bergen and Hordaland Hiking Association
- Stavanger Trekking Association
- Trondhjems Turistforening
- DNT Telemark
- Troms Turlag
- DNT Romsdal
Something to think about during your stay
Please show consideration for both people and animals:
- Keep your dog on a leash at the cabin and along the route
- Remember that some people may be afraid of dogs
- Do not allow dogs on beds or furniture
- Clean up thoroughly after your dog
It can be helpful to bring:
- A familiar blanket or bedding for your dog
- A towel to dry your dog before going indoors
- Enough dog food for the entire trip (not sold at cabins)
General rules for dogs in self-service cabins:
- Your dog can only be in the rooms that are adapted for dogs
- You must pre-book a cage for dogs that will be staying indoors
- Dogs cannot stay in beds or other furniture
- Bring bedding for the dog if necessary, do not use the cabin's bedding or blankets
- Do not move the cages
- Always follow the rules for leash enforcement, in many mountain areas there are grazing animals and game that need peace and quiet at all times and as little disturbance as possible.
