Packing list for ski touring
When embarking on a ski touring summit trip, you must have the proper safety equipment and weatherproof clothing packed in your backpack.
Fifty years ago, most ski touring involved moving from cabin to cabin. Today, ski touring in the high mountains has become a popular recreational activity. As the mode of travel has shifted, so too has the necessary gear. Here is a recommended packing list for your ski touring adventures.

Wear:
- Wool base layers (underwear, sweater, socks, long underwear)
- Midlayer of thicker wool
- Windproof jacket and trousers
- Hat, neck gaiter, gloves or wind mittens with wool liners
Equipment:
- Backcountry skis or touring (randonee) skis, skins, boots and poles, or splitboard, boots, and poles
- Avalanche transceiver worn on your body, with fresh batteries
- Helmet and goggles
- Backpack (at least 40 liters) containing:Shovel and probe
- Ample food and drink
- Emergency supplies
- Extra clothing (packed waterproof): wool sweater, wool mittens/wind mittens, socks, warm down or wool garments
- Seat pad
- First aid kit with sports tape
- Multi-tool, steel wire, duct tape
- Mobile phone and power bank
- Map, compass, and map case, potentially GPS
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Headlamp (it gets dark quickly in winter)
As a group, you should also bring:
- Sleeping pad
- Windbreak / bivvy bag
- Small sleeping bag
