Recommended Summit Hikes in Rondane

With several peaks exceeding 2000 meters, Rondane is an ideal destination for alpine hiking and panoramic views. Norway's oldest national park features a high concentration of accessible peaks. Staying at the staffed DNT cabins provides an excellent base for reaching multiple summits.

Veslesmeden

Starting point: Rondvassbu
Distance: 12.4 km (Round trip)
Difficulty: Medium
Elevation: 2015 m a.s.l.

While Veslesmeden is not the highest peak in the region, it offers exceptional views of the Rondslottet massif, including. On clear days, the Jotunheimen mountain range is visible to the west. The route is well-suited for families with hiking experience.

Follow these tips when traveling in mountainous areas with wild reindeer:

  • Follow marked trails
  • Stay still if you see wild reindeer, so that they can move away undisturbed
  • Use binoculars and keep your distance
  • Keep dogs on a leash
  • Stay low in the terrain and move in the wind so that the animals do not get the smell from you
  • Keep an eye on the dog and follow the rules on leashing

Høgronden

Starting point: Bjørnhollia
Distance: 19.3 km (Round trip)
Difficulty: Demanding
Elevation: 2118 m a.s.l.

Høgronden offers expansive panoramic views and is one of the 2000-meter peaks that can be reached as a day trip from Bjørnhollia. The summit can also be integrated into the multi-day trek between Bjørnhollia and Dørålseter.

Storronden

Starting point: Rondvassbu
Distance: 8.5 km (Round trip)
Difficulty: Demanding
Elevation: 2138 m a.s.l.

The hike to Storronden is one of the shorter summit routes from Rondvassbu, yet it provides a sweeping view of the entire Rondane massif. Under clear weather conditions, you can see as far as Jotunheimen.

Storsmeden

Starting point: Rondvassbu
Distance: 12.9 km (Round trip)
Difficulty: Demanding / Expert
Elevation: 2016 m a.s.l.

Storsmeden is a less accessible peak requiring scrambling. The route is unmarked and demands navigation skills and mountain experience. In return, it offers rugged terrain and dramatic views throughout the ascent.
