Questions and answers about the DNT cabins

Here you will find answers to various questions you may have about a cabin trip with DNT.

Who can use the DNT cabins?

Everyone can use DNT's cabins. At self-service and unserviced cabins, you must have the unique DNT key that you can dispose of if you are a member. Therefore, at least one person in the entourage must be a member. Some cabins are adapted for you to bring a dog, others not. On UT.no you can check what the conditions are like at each individual cabin.

How do I book a place at the DNT cabins?

You can book a place at the DNT cabins on DNT's cabin booking page. As a rule, not all beds in a cabin are available for pre-booking, some are reserved for drop-in guests.

Rules for cancellation and changes can be found in our cancellation policy.

Drop-in

For the beds that cannot be pre-booked, first come, first served. Should you come as a drop-in guest to a cabin in the mountains where all the beds are occupied, it will in most cases be possible to get a place on the mattress/floor.

Entire cabin

Some cabins that are not part of a grid have an entire cabin ordered.

Always check the opening sides of the cabin on UT.no. It is also possible that cabins are closed due to wild reindeer or other nature considerations.

Are the DNT cabins locked?

The vast majority of cabins that do not have staff are locked with DNT's standard key. Members can borrow the key for a small deposit. Note that some cabins have their own locks that require a special key. Check details for the cabin you are going to visit on UT.no.

Day visit

At most DNT cabins, you are welcome to stop by for a day visit - whether you want to take a break along the way or make yourself a bite to eat. At cabins where the entire cabin can be reserved, a day visit is generally allowed between 12 noon and 4 p.m.

Where can I get the DNT key?

You order the key in our online store, or you can also buy it via our local tourist associations/hiking associations and at some tourist offices and shops. On the website of the DNT store, you will find a list of outlets around Norway. In addition, all serviced DNT cabins have keys available.

What does it cost to stay at the DNT cabins?

A stay at a DNT cabin costs from NOK 250 to 340 for accommodation in an unmanned cabin, to around NOK 1200 for full board at serviced cabins (member price). In some cases, you rent the entire cabin. A stay in a serviced cabin will be less expensive if you stay in a larger room or dormitory.

Discount for DNT members

As a member of DNT, you get a discount on accommodation at all DNT cabins. Members of DNT ung get half price on accommodation, while members of the Children's Hiking Association stay for free at most self-service and unserviced cabins, and get an extra discount on serviced cabins.

Price list

Check the price list for DNT Oslo and Omegn's cabins in the largest mountain areas in southern Norway. Please note that tourist association cabins elsewhere in the country may have different prices. Prices for the individual cabins can be found on UT.no.

When are the DNT cabins open?

The self-service and unserviced cabins are often open all year round, with the exception of some that close during the coldest winter period, as well as some during the calving season for reindeer in May/June. Some cabins also close during the hunting season in the autumn.

Some serviced cabins are open from the end of February until well into May, while most open on the Friday before Palm Sunday and close again on Easter Sunday. From the end of June to mid-September, the vast majority of the cabins are open. Haukeliseter by the E134 over Haukelifjell is open all year round.

Many of the serviced cabins have self-service quarters outside the serviced season.

Always check the opening hours for the individual cabins at UT.no before you go on a trip!

How do I pay at the DNT cabins?

If you book a stay via DNT's cabin booking page, you pay for the stay in advance. At drop-in, you must pay afterwards. At self-service cabins, you must also remember to pay for the food you take from the self-service warehouse.

At self-service and unserviced DNT cabins, you can easily register and pay for accommodation and provisions (food) in the DNT app. Remember to download the app before the trip. The app also works without coverage.

At serviced cabins, you pay directly to the cabin.

Can I bring a dog to the DNT cabins?

Some cabins are adapted for you to bring your dog, with their own dog rooms or dog cages. At other cabins, the dog must lie outside or be assigned a place in outdoor spaces, woodsheds, etc. Dogs are normally not allowed into bedrooms, living rooms or dining rooms. This is partly out of consideration for allergy sufferers.

Are there cabins that are adapted for people with disabilities?

We have several cabins where measures have been taken to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. Use the "Availability" button on UT.no to select your search criteria and find cabins that suit your needs.

We have also compiled a list of "wheelchair friendly" cabins at UT (it also states the minimum accessibility requirements that apply to be on the list).

If there is missing information for the exact cabin you are interested in, contact the hosts or the association that operates the cabin to hear more.

Does DNT have a companion scheme?

Yes, if you have a companion certificate, your companion can get a discount on accommodation if you pre-book online. Read more about DNT's companion scheme: DNT accepts companion certificates

Do your cabins encroach on nature?

Our cabins have been tried to be placed gently in the terrain for aesthetic reasons, often in connection with older mountain pastures where there have traditionally been accommodation options. Transport of supplies to roadless cabins is limited to a few trips, often in winter, so as not to cause terrain damage.

DNT's own environmental program for cabin operations provides guidelines for everything from waste treatment to transport and energy conservation.
