How to get a free DNT cabin trip in 2025
DNT offers you the opportunity to stay at one of our cabins completely free of charge. Here's how to go about it.
DNT is giving away free overnight stays in a wide range of self- and unserviced DNT cabins to everyone in 2025. We want to get more people out on trips and for more people to get to know DNT's range of cabins, routes, and activities. The hope is that by offering free accommodation, we lower the threshold for many who are a little curious about DNT, cabin trips and outdoor life.
The booking period is 8 May to 21 May 2025 and you can book for you and up to 3 friends/family members. Available booking dates vary by cabin. You can find all the information about available dates on the booking page.

Find and book a cabin
The first step to securing your free accommodation is to book a cabin.
Visit our campaign page at hyttebestilling.dnt.no and find a cabin that suits you. Here you will find an overview of all the cabins that are part of the campaign. You can filter by location and region.
Choose the cabin, date and number of beds you want. Please note that free nights are only available during certain periods.
You can choose from many cabins all over Norway, whether you want to be in the forest, by the coast or in the mountains. If you want to know more about the cabin and the area, you can go to the cabin's website UT.no.

NB: It is important to know how to get to the cabin perhaps even before you choose a cabin. See the section on how to plan your trip below.
Plan your trip
How far is it to walk from the nearest bus stop or parking? What is right for you and your hiking companions?
Once you have chosen the cabin, you need to plan your trip. On UT.no you can find information on how to get to the cabin.
Both the planning on the map and the trip to the cabins are part of the experience. Search for the cabin on ut.no, under the tab "Access" you will find details on how to get there. You can also find hiking suggestions that go to or via the cabin. What you need to bring with you on a cabin trip
Remember to pack what you need for your stay. Although the cabins are well equipped, it is advisable to bring the necessary clothes, food and personal equipment. Also check if there is anything special you should bring to the particular cabin you have chosen. Information about that can be found on the cabin's information page on UT.no.

Arrival and use of the cabin
When you arrive at the cabin, you can lock yourself in. Follow the instructions you received when booking. Guests in the free campaign will receive their own information on how to lock themselves in.
The first thing you should do when you arrive is to enter your name, membership number and other information in the cabin register book. You must register before using a bunk. This is important to keep track of who has been at the cabin.
Then you can enjoy cabin life! Cook, play board games, and snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Remember to follow the cabin's rules and guidelines for use.
Some tips for your stay

- Heating: It’s wise to fire up the stove as soon as you’ve come into a cabin. Remember to fire up the stove with care, and remove ash before you leave
- Lighting: Some cabins have mains or solar panel electricity for lighting. However, most cabins have candles or kerosene lamps for lighting. Remember to check that candles stand firm in candlesticks. Also take care not to spill kerosene upon filling lamps.
- Water: In the cabin there’s a notice of the location of the nearest water source.
- Cooking: Propane burners are the standard cookers in all cabins. Before lighting the burner, turn the gas control valve to the “Open” position. Remember to turn it “Off” after you’ve finished.
- Food: Unmanned cabins do not have food storage, so you have to bring all the food here yourself.
- Food stock: All self-catering cabins have food storage. Here you can pick up everything you need, from crispbread and oatmeal to bagged soups and canned food. Pay for food you use at the cabin via the DNT Hyttebetaling app.
More info: Food at self-service cabins - Toilet: At DNT cabins there is an outdoor toilet. Use peat/bark to sprinkle over what you have left on the outdoor toilet.
- Drying: Hang wet laundry to dry by the oven or in the drying room.
- Show consideration: At many DNT cabins, there are several guests at the same time. Show respect for those who want to go to bed early, there should be peace in the cabin from 23.00-06.00. A headlamp is a good tip if you want to read in bed.
- Sleeping: Remember to bring a sleeping bag liner or bed linen.
How to light a fire
- Place two split sticks of wood inside the stove, split sides inward.
- Fill the cavity between them with crumpled paper, bark, or other burnable material.
- Lay small bits of wood and then a larger chunk on top.

On departure
- The rule is that you should leave the cabin in the condition you want to find it, and preferably a little better than when you arrived.
- You will find all washing equipment, broom and soap in the cabin.
- Clean all rooms that have been in use before you leave the cabin.
- Make the bed after use
- Carry firewood to the next guest
- Check that the switch on the gas cylinder regulator is closed. Do not disconnect the regulator on the gas cylinder
- Check that all windows and doors are closed before leaving the cabin

Garbage
At all the cabins you will find information about what to do with rubbish, and how to sort at source. At many cabins, including the cabins in Oslomarka, you should always take all rubbish home. Remember to bring a plastic bag for the garbage!
