Ever since our inception in 1868, the association's core purpose has remained unchanged: to make it easy for people to experience nature. Our official objects clause reads as follows:
“The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) works to promote a simple, active, versatile, and nature-friendly outdoor lifestyle, and to safeguard the right of public access (allemannsretten) as well as the natural and cultural foundations of outdoor recreation.”
DNT's new strategic direction was officially adopted at the National Assembly in Stavanger in June 2025. This roadmap, spanning from 2026 to 2031, is titled "Community with and in Nature"." (Fellesskap med og i naturen).
With this strategy, DNT aims to elevate our responsibility to protect nature for future generations. It also emphasizes the vital importance of the communities DNT creates and strengthens through all our meeting places and outdoor activities.
DNT's Core Values
Our core values guide everything we do and are reflected in all of the association's offerings:
Exciting (Spennende): DNT will offer challenging and exciting experiences for everyone. Reliable (Trygg): Safety and quality are paramount across the entire organization. Inclusive (Inkluderende): DNT will provide activities where everyone feels welcome, including those with no prior experience with us. Simple (Enkel): We want to help people experience the pure joy of a simple outdoor life. Nature-friendly (Naturvennlig): All of DNT's operations, including activities, cabins, and trails, must be environmentally friendly.
Strategy (2026–2031)
DNT's overarching strategy is embedded in our current roadmap, "Community with and in Nature."
This strategic plan outlines our core principles, long-term ambitions, and the specific sub-goals we will prioritize together. Throughout this strategy period, all activities and organizational decisions will be rooted in three foundational pillars: Sustainability, Volunteerism, and Safety.
These pillars support our work toward four key ambitions:
DNT will offer attractive, inclusive activities and promote lifelong participation in outdoor recreation.
DNT will preserve and further develop our network of cabins and trails.
DNT will be a community that more people want to actively take part in.
DNT will be a clear, relevant social advocate and a driving force for nature conservation.
Through these ambitions, we will achieve our ultimate vision: Nature experiences for life.
