The DNT key
As a member, you get access to the standard DNT cabin key, which unlocks hundreds of our unstaffed and self-service cabins across Norway. For many of our members, this little key is the most valuable membership benefit of all.
The vast majority of DNT cabins without a resident host are locked using this standardized key system. Therefore, it is a golden rule of thumb to always pack the DNT key in your backpack before heading out.
As a DNT member, you can obtain the key by paying a small deposit, and you can keep it for as long as your membership is active and paid. You can purchase the key through your local DNT member association or online at dntbutikken.no.
Please remember that while the key unlocks the cabins, you must always pay for your overnight stay and any food items you consume, either by booking in advance or using the payment options available at the cabin.
Please note that a few select cabins within the DNT network require a special, unique key. These are typically destination-specific cabins or rentals suited for larger groups and events. You can always find specific key information, cabin details, and opening hours for each location on Ut.no.
You can pick up a key at any of DNT’s local Hiking Centers (Tursentre) , and all staffed DNT lodges also have keys available for purchase. For a full list of retail outlets across Norway, visit the DNT online store.
Important: Check your DNT key before your trip!
A batch of mismanufactured DNT keys has unfortunately entered circulation, and these do not fit all cabin locks. We strongly advise checking your key before you head into the mountains.
As shown in the photo, the faulty key (top) has an incorrect notch at the very tip of the key blade (the bit). If you have one of these faulty keys, you can exchange it for free at one of our Hiking Centers, or order a replacement via the online DNT store. If you are handy and have access to a grinder or sander, you can also easily file down the incorrect notch yourself. DNT sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.
