Packing list winter day trip
When packing for winter day trips, it's important to consider where and when you'll be going. There can be significant differences between a short training trek on machine-groomed cross-country ski trails versus a six-hour expedition deep into the high mountains. Regardless, the weather can change quickly and accidents can happen, so you must dress and pack your backpack appropriately for the trip and conditions.
What you should bring
Here is the DNT's recommended list of items to have in your backpack for winter day trips, in addition to the winter clothing you'll be wearing and any skis, snowshoes or footwear.
- Windproof jacket and trousers
- Extra wool sweater
- Extra hat and mittens
- Basic first aid kit, including sports tape and a small knife
- Hot drinks and food for longer trips
- Sunglasses or alpine goggles
- Map and mobile phone
- Seat pad or sleeping pad
- Ski wax, if using traditional skis (not skin skis)
In the high mountains, you must also bring:
- Heated jacket or sweater
- Compass
- Headlamp
- Windbreak, shovel, and probe (at least one person in the group should have these)
