Take the train to the mountains
There is always a train to new hiking adventures. Here are some good hiking tips.
From mountains to fjords: Finse - Aurlandsdalen
This is one of Norway's most beautiful trips: Take the Bergen Railway to Finse station. From here, you continue north into Skarvheimen National Park. The last stage goes west down the Aurlandsdalen valley, all the way down to the Sognefjord. The classic route takes you through 57 km of the most beautiful Norwegian nature has to offer.

From Finse's monumental high mountain landscape to the lush deep valleys down to Aurland. Through dramatic waterfalls to romantic flower meadows. Three days filled with small and large experiences that belong on every bucket list. All on DNT's marked trails, with accommodation in serviced cabins.
The hiking opportunities from Finse station are many, both north in Skarvheimen and south on Hardangervidda. How about taking the train to Finse or Haugastøl and cycling the popular and magnificent Rallarvegen? A beautiful trip in the transition between eastern and western Norway. Remember that the season is short - not until the end of July is the whole road passable.
In the kingdom of musk oxen: Dovrefjell and Snøhetta
Take the Dovre Railway and climb Norway's highest mountain outside Jotunheimen. If you are lucky, you will see the musk oxen that live in the area. Remember to keep a good distance!

Snøhetta 2286 meters above sea level is Dovrefjell's landmark, and the peak can be seen both from the train and from the E6. In earlier times, it was considered to be Norway's highest mountain. Today we know better, but it is easy to agree that the Snøhetta massif is impressive where it towers high and free over the mountain plateaus of Dovre.
There are many other hiking opportunities from Hjerkinn station, including Rondane from north to south, which starts at Hjerkinn. There are many other hiking opportunities from Hjerkinn station, including Rondane from north to south, which starts at Hjerkinn.
Here you walk through beautiful mountain scenery, and pass Dørålglupen, called by many "The Gate to Rondane". Then the trip continues among the majestic peaks and out on the other side, down towards soft paths at Ringebu. You will visit the friendly staffed DNT cabins Grimsdalshytta, Bjørnhollia and Rondvassbu on the way, self-service Eldåbu and private Dørålseter.
Wild reindeer
This tour goes through the wild reindeer's habitats. The wild reindeer are very shy, and it therefore takes little for them to be disturbed. They will often detect us long before we see them. We encourage you to show special consideration.
- Follow marked trails
- Stay still if you see wild reindeer, so that they can move away undisturbed
- Use binoculars and keep your distance
- Stay low in the terrain and move in the wind so that the animals do not get the smell from you
- Keep an eye on the dog and follow the rules on leashing
Bergen Railway: Visit Høgabu
Not far outside Bergen is one of Bergen and Hordaland Turlag's cabins, the self-service Høgabu. Here you are in the middle of a great hiking area and have a nice base for day trips high and low with wide views.

The waters around the cabin are well housed with fish, so here there are opportunities to pull up mountain dinner of the best kind. Of course, you are also free to enjoy a day or two with a book, campfire coffee and a lazy life.
Journey: Take the Bergen Railway to Vaksdal, and take the route up Herfindal. The first seven kilometers on the road, before just over four hours of nice hiking on a path to the cabin. The trip back to the train goes via Storafjellet with a fantastic view of Dale. The stage is relatively long, but mostly goes uphill or downhill.
If you want a slightly shorter trip, we recommend taking the train to the pleasant self-service cabin Hallingskeid, and go on day trips from there. The cottage is located 200 meters from the train station.
Take the train to Norway across
Sylan offers an expedition experience that no other mountain area can boast. You can cross Norway across 63º north, all the way from the fjord in Stjørdal and end up at the Swedish border in Tydal. Travel green to and from by hopping on the train or bus to Værnes/Stjørdal and returning from Stuggudalen by bus. There are serviced and self-service cabins all the way.
One of the treats on the trip is the mountain massif Sylan on the Swedish border, which there are few mountain areas that can compare to. This is a demanding trip. But seize the chance, challenge yourself, and make memories for life.

You will visit several self-service cabins and, the pleasant serviced cabins Storerikvollen, Schultzhytta and Nedalshytta.
