When can you go hiking in the high mountains of Norway?
The summer trekking season in the Norwegian high mountains generally runs from the end of June until mid-September. Lower-lying areas enjoy a longer season for hiking.
Snowmelt and high water levels in May and June
The transition period between winter and summer is characterized by rapid snowmelt, swelling rivers, and rushing streams in the mountains. For your own safety, hiking in the high mountains is strongly discouraged during this time.
Wild reindeer calving season - please show consideration
Wild reindeer are exceptionally vulnerable to disturbances during the spring calving season, which is why many of DNT's cabins and lodges are closed during this period. We highly recommend planning your trip to an alternative area at this time.

The summer season in the mountains
Most staffed DNT lodges (betjente hytter) are located in the high mountains and open at the end of June or the beginning of July. This is also when DNT deploys its seasonal summer bridges, making it possible and safe to cross rivers while hiking.
When the staffed lodges close in mid-September, these bridges are dismantled for the winter. However, some staffed lodges remain open until the end of the autumn school holidays (høstferien). Haukeliseter is open year-round.
Extended summer season in lower-lying areas
In lower mountain ranges and forested areas, the hiking season lasts longer. Lodges such as Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte, Lysefjorden Turisthytte, Tungestølen, and Gjendesheim open earlier in the season. You can find more information about specific opening hours on each lodge's website, or you can contact your local DNT member association for tips on where to hike in June!
Check opening hours
Always make sure to check the opening hours of the lodges along your planned route. We also recommend checking your map to locate marked river crossings and bridges. If you are in doubt, please feel free to contact the lodges directly.
Year-to-year variations
Conditions in the mountains vary from year to year. Depending on the remaining snowpack or high water levels, the deployment of summer bridges may occasionally be delayed.

You can find all cabin opening hours and booking information on UT.no, the DNT cabin booking page, or on the cabins' dedicated websites.
