10 tips on mobile phone use on a hike

The mobile phone can be a useful aid on a hike, but you cannot rely on it in all situations or areas.

  • In many places in the mountains, there is poor coverage, especially in the national parks. Check your mobile coverage before your trip. Telenor and Telia have their own coverage maps.
  • Check UT.no whether the cabin you are going to visit has coverage.
  • Do not agree on calling times. You may be in areas without coverage when you should have called.
  • Recharge your battery before you go on a trip. Save your battery, you may need it. Bring a charger, but remember that most tourist cabins don't have electricity.
  • An emergency charger is important to bring - remember to have this fully charged before the trip.
  • Store your mobile phone and any spare battery as warmly as possible. Cold greatly reduces battery capacity.
  • Store your mobile phone and emergency charger in waterproof packaging.
  • If you do not have coverage, search for the heights.
  • If you can't make a call, try sending a text message. It comes through much easier.
  • Remember that a mobile phone can never replace regular hiking equipment and mountain sense.
