At the heart of the Lysefjord you will find Lysebotn and Lysefjorden tourist cabin - a perfect starting point for some of Norway's most iconic nature experiences. Here you can combine world-famous mountain hikes with relaxing fjord spas, paddling on mirror-like water, bike rides and tasty meals with a symphony of colors.
Here is our guide to the best experiences in the Lysefjord this summer.
1. Hike to Kjerag and Kjeragbolten
No summer visit to the Lysefjord is complete without a trip to Kjerag. The iconic rock formation towers 1,000 meters above the fjord, attracting hikers from all over the world.
The trail offers rugged scenery, expansive views of the Lysefjord, and the famous Kjeragbolten boulder.
- Tip: Stay overnight at the Lysefjorden cabin before or after the hike for an extra comfortable experience. It is possible to book transport from the cabin and all the way up to the starting point for the trip to Kjerag via SBK base.
2. Experience the view from Jenafjell
Jenafjell is one of the area's lesser-known viewpoints (830 masl.). The trail is quieter than Kjerag, but it offers panoramic views of the fjord landscape, nearby valleys, and mountains. This is an excellent option for those looking to experience the region's nature away from the larger crowds.
3. Climb the iconic Flørli stairs
Flørli is home to the world’s longest wooden staircase, featuring a total of 4,444 steps. The route combines industrial cultural history with views of the Lysefjord. You can choose to hike all the way to the top or explore the historic settlement along the shoreline.
4. Explore the Lysefjord by SUP or canoe
Some of the best experiences can be found out on the fjord. Rent a SUP board, canoe or pedal boat and experience Lysefjorden from a whole new perspective.
Paddling is suitable for both beginners and experienced adventurers, and provides a unique proximity to the fjord.
5. Relax at the fjord spa
After an active day in the mountains, there are few better ways to recharge than a visit to the fjord spa.
Down by the fjord, you can book a time in the sauna, enjoy the heat and take a refreshing evening swim in the Lysefjord. The combination of hot sauna, fresh fjord air and spectacular views provides a very special experience.
This is perhaps the Lysefjord's most relaxing activity?
6. Play disc golf in Lysedalen
Did you know that you can play disc golf right behind the garden of Lysefjorden tourist cabin? Located in the innermost part of Lysedalen, the course is set in an idyllic forest alongside a rushing river with natural river pools.
The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced players. Disc golf sets can be borrowed at the cabin reception, where you will also find information regarding court access and payment via Vipps/QR code.
7. Discover the area by bike
From Lysebotn, you can explore the surrounding landscape on two wheels. Cycling allows you to cover more ground and experience the steep terrain efficiently. We particularly recommend the ride to the Tangakjelen waterfall, which features a rest area with scenic views. The famous Lysevegen road, with its 27 hairpin turns, is also a notable ride.
- Logistics: You can bring your own bike on the ferry (reservation required) or transport it on a car bike rack. SBK Base is also working on providing bike rentals in Lysebotn; check their website for updated availability.
8. End the day with a tasty three-course dinner
After a long day outside, you can dine in our cozy restaurant or out in the garden surrounded by the mountain landscape. Lysefjorden tourist cabin serves a set menu, including a three-course dinner based on fresh ingredients and local culinary traditions.
The dishes are carefully presented, often garnished with fresh, edible flowers from the cabin's own herb garden.

Lysefjorden tourist cabin offers comfortable rooms, traditional meals, and activities right outside your door.
