FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about DNT Cabins
Find answers to everything you need to know for your next DNT cabin adventure.
Who can use the DNT cabins?
The cabins are open to everyone. However, at self-service and no-service cabins, you need the standard DNT key. As a DNT member, you can borrow this key for a deposit. Therefore, at least one person in your group must be a member. Some cabins are dog-friendly, while others are not, please check the specific conditions for each cabin on UT.no.
How do I book a stay at the DNT cabins?
You can book your stay in advance via the DNT's cabin booking page. Generally, not all beds are available for pre-booking; some are always reserved for drop-in guests.
Cancellation: Please refer to our Cancellation Policy for rules regarding changes or refunds.
What if I arrive without a reservation (Drop-in)?
For beds that cannot be pre-booked, we operate on a "first-come, first-served" basis. If you arrive as a drop-in guest at a mountain cabin and all beds are occupied, you will still be provided with a place to sleep, typically on a mattress on the floor. No one is turned away in the mountains.
Are the cabins locked?
The vast majority of cabins that are not staffed are locked with the standard DNT key. Members can borrow the key for a small deposit. Note that some cabins have unique locks requiring a special key. Always check the specific cabin details on UT.no. Some cabins may be closed due to wild reindeer migration or other environmental considerations.
Can I visit a cabin during the day?
Yes! You are welcome to stop by for a break or to cook a meal. For cabins that must be booked in their entirety (private hire), day visits are generally permitted between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM (12:00–16:00).
The vast majority of cabins that do not have staff are locked with DNT's standard key. Members can borrow the key for a small deposit. Note that some cabins have their own locks that require a special key. Check details for the cabin you are going to visit on UT.no.
Where can I get the DNT key?
The DNT key is a member-only benefit. If you are a member, you can order the key from our online store, or pick it up at local DNT offices, selected tourist information centers, and outdoor shops.
All staffed DNT cabins also have keys available. You can find a full list of outlets on our website. In addition, all serviced DNT cabins have keys available.

Staffed cabins: Som open from late February through May, while most open on the Friday before Palm Sunday and close again on Easter Sunday (winter season), and from late June to mid-September (summer). Haukeliseter is open all year.

Guidelines for dogs at our cabins
Are there cabins that are adapted for people with disabilities?
We are constantly working to improve accessibility. Use the "Availability" filter on UT.no to find suitable cabins. We also maintain a list of wheelchair friendly cabins. For specific needs, we recommend contacting the local association operating the cabin directly.
Do DNT cabins impact the environment?
DNT is committed to preserving nature. Our cabins are placed carefully in the terrain, often on historic sites. We limit transport to roadless cabins, primarily using winter transport to prevent terrain damage. Our environmental program provides strict guidelines for waste management, energy conservation, and sustainable operations.
