Public Health and Inclusion
At DNT, we work to lower the barrier to entry so that more people can enjoy our activities. We run several initiatives designed to inspire people to get outdoors, creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for those who may not yet be familiar with what we offer.
Urban Outdoor Recreation (Nærtur)
We want to inspire and welcome new generations of hikers in and around our major cities. Our Urban Outdoor Life initiative focuses on creating outdoor activities and volunteering opportunities in Norway’s four largest cities, specifically targeting districts where many residents are unfamiliar with outdoor recreation. Part of this project involves developing accessible outdoor spaces and trail networks close to urban centers, alongside a diverse range of local activities.
Active at 100 (Aktiv i 100)
Active at 100 brings extra meaning and vitality to everyday life. In collaboration with the Red Cross, DNT aims to expand outdoor opportunities, and enhance quality of life, for seniors across the country. The project facilitates local walking groups that meet at least once a week during the day. There are currently over 130 groups nationwide, fostering well-being, community, and wonderful nature experiences for seniors who want to hike with others.

The Children’s Hiking Club (Barnas Turlag)
Through positive experiences in nature, simple outdoor living, and exciting activities, we want to help more children fall in love with the outdoors. The Children’s Hiking Club is designed for the whole family, with a special focus on children aged 0–12. We organize easily accessible trips and activities that everyone can participate in, making it simple for all children to join the fun.

Language Practice through DNT
Outdoor recreation is a powerful key to integration and inclusion in Norwegian society. DNT is committed to providing an environment where everyone feels welcome. We have expanded our focus from the high mountains into local communities to reach more people and introduce them to our hiking programs. This is vital for public health and ensures that the outdoor community becomes more diverse.

Introductory Courses (Introkurs)
Introductory courses build confidence and keep people safe in nature. These programs teach fundamental outdoor skills, giving participants the confidence, safety, and inspiration needed to head out on day hikes and overnight trips. The purpose is to lower the barrier to both organized and independent outdoor recreation by sharing foundational knowledge with groups who have little to no prior experience.

National Hiking Day (Kom Deg Ut-dagen)
National Hiking Day (Kom deg ut-dagen) is held on the first Sunday of February and September each year. This is DNT’s nationwide celebration of the outdoors, designed to give everyone a taste of nature that leaves them wanting more. All events are either completely free or heavily subsidized. Our certified tour leaders and activity coordinators host the events, arrange campfires, and even organize bus transport where needed. It is a day where absolutely everyone is welcome, showcasing the wonderful diversity of our community.
