Packing list for ski touring

On a summit trip, you must have safety equipment in place and clothing that protects against the weather. You need to pack this in your backpack if you are going on a ski touring in the winter mountains.

Fifty years ago, most of us went from twig to twig, from cabin to cabin. Today, summit tours with randonee equipment have become the new folk sport. Where it used to be common to walk around, we are now transitioning. Here is a simple recipe for what you must bring - and wear, on the summit trip.

Watch a video of how to pack your backpack for ski touring:

Dress in:

  • Wool underwear, sweater, socks, longs (wool boxes and bras)
  • Thicker wool as a mid-layer
  • Windproof jacket and trousers
  • Hat, neck, gloves or wind mittens with wool mittens inside

Equipment:

  • Backcountry skis or randonnee skis, skins, boots and poles, or snowboard/splitboard, boots, snowshoes and poles
  • Transceiver - on body, with fresh battery
  • Helmet and goggles
  • Backpack (at least 40 litres) with: shovel and probe, plenty of food and drink, emergency provisions.
  • Extra clothing (packed waterproof): wool sweater, wool mittens/wind mittens, socks, warm garments in down or wool
  • Seat pads
  • First aid kit with sports tape
  • Multi-tool, steel wire and duct tape
  • Mobile phone and power bank
  • Map, compass and map folder, possibly GPS.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Headlamp – it gets dark quickly in winter.

The tour group must bring:

  • Sleeping pad
  • Windsack
  • Small sleeping bag
