Paddle rules: 10 tips for a safe kayak trip

Kayaking and canoeing is a fantastic experience all year round, whether you're exploring the Norwegian archipelago or mirror-like lakes. But as a vulnerable road user on the water, safety is the most important thing. Here are the official paddling rules and ten important safety tips for those who are planning a safe and nice paddling trip.

Top 10 Kayak and Canoe Safety Rules:

1. Always wear a certified buoyancy aid or life jacket

Safety starts with a properly fitted buoyancy aid. We recommend a certified paddling vest designed for your body size and weight, with a minimum buoyancy of 50N. A good paddling vest provides both safety and full freedom of movement on the water.

2. Make yourself visible on the water

Kayakers and canoeists sit low in the water and can be difficult for other water users to spot, especially from motorboats. Choose bright, highly visible colours for your kayak, clothing and buoyancy aid.

If paddling at dusk or after dark, carry approved navigation lights and consider adding reflective tape to your kayak.

3. Dress according to the water temperature (not the air temperature)

Always plan your clothing based on the temperature of the water. Ask yourself: What if I end up in the water? In cold conditions, wear a dry suit or wetsuit and always carry a complete set of dry spare clothes in a waterproof bag.

4. Check the weather forecast and respect the waters

You are exposed in a kayak, and wind, currents and waves can quickly turn a calm trip into a risky situation. Cold and headwinds drain strength quickly. Always familiarize yourself with the area you are going to paddle in, and check the weather forecast on Yr.no before you head out. Turn in time.

5. Know your limits and paddle within your abilities

Choose a kayak, canoe and equipment that match your skill level, and check that everything is in good working order before launching. No matter how experienced you are, paddling with others is always safer than paddling alone.

6. Carry essential safety equipment

Even on short outings, you should bring basic safety and rescue equipment, such as a spare paddle, paddle float and bilge pump if relevant. Pack sufficient food, water and extra warm clothing in waterproof bags. Conditions can change quickly, and small problems can become serious if you are unprepared.

7. Inform others about your plans

Always tell a friend or family member where you are going, your planned route and when you expect to return. Carry reliable means of communication, such as a mobile phone in a waterproof case or a VHF radio where appropriate, and make sure you know how to use them in an emergency.

8. Stay together when paddling in a group

Group paddling requires teamwork and awareness. Regularly check that everyone is keeping up and comfortable with the conditions. Adjust the group's pace to the least experienced or slowest paddler to ensure everyone stays safe.

9. Be a good role model on the water

The more experienced kayaker you are, the more important it is to lead by example. Show consideration for other seafarers and wildlife. Act environmentally conscious by practicing traceless travel, always take your own and others' rubbish home.

10. Practise rescue skills regularly

Safety skills must be practised, not just learned in theory. Never paddle in conditions that exceed what you have trained for. Before undertaking longer or more demanding trips, make sure you can confidently perform both self-rescues and assisted rescues in controlled conditions.

Remember: The best safety equipment is good judgement. Careful planning, realistic decision-making and respect for the conditions will always be your most important tools on the water.
