Medvind – The Mountain Route to Aurlandsdalen
Medvind is one of DNT’s signature concept routes. The trail is easily accessible and suitable for most hikers. This mountain route toward the Aurlandsdalen valley features contrasting landscapes, ranging from barren, rocky terrain to lush valleys, high mountains, and rivers where Eastern and Western Norway meet.
While it is the most accessible of DNT's concept routes, it still requires proper preparation. The three stages offer a gradual transition in terrain and scenery, making it an excellent introduction to multi-day trekking.

Practical Information
Accommodations
Overnights are spent at staffed DNT lodges, where dinner and breakfast are served by the hosts. The route starts at Finsehytta, continues across the high-alpine terrain to Geiterygghytta, and concludes down in the valley at Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte.
Transportation and Getting There
To the Start:
Take the Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen) daily, year-round to Finse Station. Finsehytta is located approximately 500 meters from the platform.
From the Finish (Vassbygdi):
Option 1: Take the local bus back to Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte for an additional overnight stay, and catch the connecting bus to Ål Station the following day.
Option 2: Take the local bus from Vassbygdi to Flåm. From Flåm, travel via the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) to Myrdal Station to connect with trains toward Oslo or Bergen.

Packing Guidelines
Pack efficiently to avoid carrying unnecessary weight. Even in mid-summer, weather conditions in the high mountains can change rapidly, and sleet or snow may occur. Always pack sufficient warm layers and a change of clothes.
Packing list for the summer trip
Are you wondering what to take with you on a trip in the summer mountains? DNT's packing lists contain information and tips on what you should think about before the trip.
When packing for the trip in the summer mountains, you must first and foremost think about where and when you will go. Remember that even in the middle of summer, sleet and snow can occur in the high mountains. Always bring enough hot change.

How to Show Consideration on Your Hike
Enjoying the outdoors is a shared experience. Following these simple guidelines ensures that we protect nature and respect our fellow hikers.
Respect the Environment
Leave No Trace: Always practice "traceless travel." Carry out everything you bring in and leave the area exactly as you found it.
Protect Nature and History: Avoid damaging vegetation and keep a respectful distance from sites of cultural-historical value, such as stone ruins or burial mounds.
Do Not Disturb Wildlife: Maintain a respectful distance from birds and animals, especially during nesting and breeding seasons.
Respect Others
Keep the Peace: Many people hike to enjoy the silence. Avoid loud music or unnecessary noise that may disturb the tranquility.
Share the Trail: Be courteous and make room for others, whether you are walking, running, or cycling.
Respect Private Property: While the Right of Public Access is broad, always respect the privacy of those living in houses or cabins near the trail.
Key Concepts for Hikers
"Leave No Trace" (Sporløs ferdsel): This is the golden rule of Norwegian hiking. If you brought it in, you take it out. This includes everything from food scraps and orange peels to hygiene products.
