DNT cabins on Saltfjellet
There are five no-service DNT cabins on Saltfjellet that are tied together in a grid. There are several possible start and end points that are accessible by public transport.
Bolnastua
Bolnastua serves as an excellent gateway to the Saltfjellet mountains, located just 200 meters from the historic, disused Bolna train station and about 100 meters from the E6 highway.
During the summer months, you can drive your car all the way up to the cabin. Bolnastua is also a popular stop along the legendary 650 km long Nordlandsruta hiking trail.
The cabin visit from A to Z
Most of DNT's cabins are self-service (with provisions) and unmanned cabins (without provisions). Here you will find out what you need to think about before you go on a cabin trip to a cabin without staff.
Krukkistua
Krukkistua is one of only two remaining historic telegraph stations left in Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park. It is beautifully situated on the edge of the Krukkimyrene wetlands, where the gentle Bjøllåga (Biellok) River lazily winds its way southward through the scenic Bjøllådalen (Biellokvágge) valley.
Saltfjellstua
Saltfjellstua is located right in the heart of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park, just one kilometer south of Lake Søre Bjøllåvatnet. From this cabin, you can easily connect to the extensive trail network stretching across Saltfjellet in all directions.
Midtistua
Positioned exactly halfway between Krukkistua and Bjellåvasstua, Midtistua lies in the very core of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park. This cozy cabin is steeped in history, originally serving as the area's telegraph station number 3.
Bjellåvasstua
Bjellåvasstua sits in an open, scenic location at the northern end of Lake Nordre Bjøllåvann within the national park. The cabin is close enough to the nearest road to be an achievable destination for families with young children, yet remote enough to provide a genuine, deep-wilderness experience.
Lønsstua
Lønsstua is a premier starting point for mountain adventures in Saltfjellet and a highly popular cabin for all types of outdoor enthusiasts.
For some, it is the ideal launchpad for longer cabin to cabin treks deeper into the national park or across toward Sulitjelma. For others, the cabin serves as a perfect weekend destination for relaxed day trips in the local area.
Other starting points for trips into Saltfjellet
Beiarstua
Kickstart your Saltfjellet adventure by taking the public bus directly to Beiarstua. If you plan to end your hike here and take the bus back home, please note that the bus ride must be booked in advance.
Tverrbrennstua
Tverrbrennstua consists of two cabins located close to one another on the Beiarfjellet plateau. It serves as an excellent starting point for both short day hikes in the immediate area and longer backpacking trips deeper into Saltfjellet. Convenient public bus transportation is available to and from this location.
Jordbruhytta
Jordbruhytta is situated in a highly scenic area just west and above Russånes. The surrounding landscape is famous for its unique karst topography and numerous caves; in fact, the Russåga River spectacularly emerges from a cave opening just below the cabin. To get here, you can take the bus to Russånes (followed by a 3 km hike) or the train to Røkland station (approx. 10 km from the cabin).
Telegrafruta - Historical hiking route
The Telegraph Route is a beautiful and easy hiking route that follows the disused telegraph line over Saltfjellet, through Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park. This trip is one of our Historical Walking Routes.
