What to pack for a DNT cabin trip
Are you planning a trip to a no-service or self-service cabin? Here is an overview of what you need to bring, what you can find at the cabin, and some smart additions for your backpack.
Note: This list is for cabins with easy access. If you are planning a long mountain hike between cabins, please consult our Mountain Hiking Packing List. If visiting a self-service cabin, you do not need to bring your own food, as these cabins have a stocked pantry.
Free equipment rental
If you need gear for your trip, you can borrow equipment for free from BUA or Skattekammeret locations throughout Norway.
Essential items to bring:
- Bedding: You must always bring a sleeping bag liner* (a thin "sheet bag") or standard bed linen. Note: Using a duvet without a liner/linen is not permitted for hygiene reasons.
- Food: Bring all the food you plan to eat (unless visiting a self-service cabin).
- The DNT Key: Ensure you have the standard DNT key to unlock the cabin.
- DNT Membership: Have your digital membership card ready in the DNT app
- Booking Confirmation: Bring a digital or printed copy of your receipt.
- Clothing: A warm sweater, and a wind- and waterproof jacket.
- Navigation: A paper or digital map (remember: mobile coverage is often unavailable in the mountains).
- Footwear: Sturdy shoes suitable for the terrain.
- First Aid: A simple first aid kit and your mobile phone.
- Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
Recommended additions:
- Light: A headlamp or flashlight (essential in spring and autumn).
- Fire-starting: Matches, a lighter, or kindling briquettes (please do not use tea lights).
- A tea towel and a washcloth.
- Water: If you are unsure about the local drinking water, bring some extra (check the cabin's page on UT.no for water source details).
- Extra layers: Wool socks, a hat, and a change of clothes.
- Navigation tools: Compass or GPS.
- Comfort: A seat pad for outdoor breaks.
What you will find at the cabin:
Most DNT cabins are well-equipped, so you don't have to carry everything. You will usually find:
- Sleeping area: Duvets, pillows, and wool blankets are provided.
- Kitchen: Fully equipped with pots, pans, cutlery, and a gas stove for cooking.
- Heating: Firewood and matches are usually available.
- Cleaning: Toilet paper, cleaning supplies, dish soap, and cloths.
- Entertainment: Many cabins have board games, decks of cards, and books.
Important: Some cabins may have fewer facilities. Always read the specific description for your cabin on UT.no carefully before you start your trip!
