For many, the self-service cabins are the ultimate symbol of the DNT experience: A cabin that is unstaffed but features a pantry stocked with food available for purchase. Here are some tips for your cabin cooking!
The self-service DNT cabins are located from Agder in the south to Trøndelag in Central Norway. Many hikers are excited to see what’s inside the pantry upon arrival, is there chocolate? Maybe pancake mix? On long treks, people often dream of specific dishes or a special treat.
Through our project "Mat med utsikt" (Food with a View), DNT has worked to make the selection at self-service cabins more predictable, sustainable, and inclusive.
Below is our recommended standard selection for self-service cabins. Please note that there will always be local variations, and cabins located deep in the mountains may not be replenished throughout the season. If a shelf is empty, it’s empty.
Dinner and side dishes: Bergen fish soup, canned peas and carrots, mashed potatoes, meat stew (lapskaus), whole grain rice, bacalao, mixed beans, barley groats, Pasta di Parma, Chili Con Carne, whole grain macaroni, tomato soup*, canned chicken, Stroganoff, dry red lentils, crushed tomatoes.
Dessert and snacks: Chocolate pudding, custard, fruit soup, dark cooking chocolate, Kvikk Lunsj, Bixit chocolate biscuits.
*Products marked with an asterisk are either gluten-free or available as a gluten-free alternative.
In addition to the items for sale, you will find basic supplies like sugar, cinnamon, salt, pepper, and other spices at the cabin to flavor your meals.
To ensure that DNT can continue offering stocked pantries, guests are responsible for tidying up, keeping the pantry in order, and paying for what they use. Enjoy this unique service and eat well without the heavy backpack!
In collaboration with Joker and Nærbutikken, DNT has created a recipe booklet called "Food with a View". It offers inspiration for delicious, sustainable meals based on the provisions found in our cabins. You can find physical copies at the cabins or read the digital version below.
