For many, the self-service cabins are the very symbol of DNT: A cabin that is unmanned, but which has a stock room with food you can buy. Here are some cooking tips!
The self-service DNT cabins can be found from Agder in the south to Trøndelag in Central Norway.
Many people are excited when they arrive at a self-service cabin - what's inside the provision storage? Is it chocolate? Maybe pancakes? On long trips, it's individual dishes or something good you dream about.
Through the project Food with a view , we at DNT have worked to make the product selection at the self-service cabins more predictable for guests, and that we offer provisions that are a little more sustainable and inclusive than before.
Below you can see what we recommend as standard options for the self-service cabins. However, there will always be some local adaptations, and also be aware that some cabins that are located far into the mountains do not get replenishment of goods throughout the season. If it's empty, it's empty.
Standard selection of provisions in self-service cabins
Dinner and side dishes: Bergen fish soup, peas and carrots, mashed potatoes, canned stew, whole grain rice, bacalao, bean mix, barley groats, Pasta di Parma, Chili Con Carne, whole grain macaroni, tomato soup*, canned shoulder chicken, stroganoff stew, dry red lentils, crushed canned tomatoes
Dessert and snacks: Chocolate pudding, custard, fruit soup, dark cooking chocolate, Kvikk Lunsj, Bixit chocolate
Products marked with * are either gluten-free, or available as a gluten-free alternative
In addition to the product range, you will find sugar, cinnamon, pepper, salt and some other spices at the cottage that you can use to flavor the food.
Remember that in order for the DNT associations to be able to continue with the arrangement with provisions rooms, you as a guest are responsible for cleaning, keeping order and paying for the food. Enjoy a unique offer, and eat well without carrying yourself down!
DNT has together with Joker and Nærbutikken created a recipe booklet called "Food with a view".
The booklet contains inspiration for good and sustainable food on a trip, based on the provisions stored at DNT's cabins. The booklets will be available at the self-service cabins, and you can read it digitally below.
