New Life for Old Favorites
Customization and redesign are excellent ways to extend the lifespan of your clothing and gear. Do you have a jacket that has seen better days and no longer works as it should? Or do you need to customize your hiking equipment? You can commission us to do the job, or sign up for one of our upcoming workshops.
Examples of our redesign projects:
Njål's Cloudberry Vest
Njål stays warm in the mountains while foraging for cloudberries in a sweater vest made from three of his old favorite garments. He loved the neck of his Ulvang sweater, but the sleeves were completely worn out. Another sweater, knitted by his mother 30 years ago, had perfect sleeves but was no longer being used. Finally, he had a down jacket that had been washed to pieces. We combined the three into a unique, functional vest.
Anders’ Tent Jacket
Anders brought us his broken tent and asked if we could turn it into a running jacket. We repurposed the tent's original parts and features directly into the garment, including using the tent's ventilation hatch as a back vent for the jacket. We love it when people think outside the tent and see the possibilities of what we can create.
The Lysefjord Cushion Concept
For the Lysefjord cabin (Lysefjorden Turisthytte), we created a custom interior concept for a corner of the fireplace lounge. This cabin is a well-known, vibrant gathering spot for BASE jumpers, which inspired our cushion design. Using donated, pre-owned parachutes, we crafted a selection of colorful cushions using various textile techniques. Placed at window height on a soft, wool-covered bench, they allow guests to lean back and enjoy views of the mountains and fjords after a day of hiking or jumping.
Cabin Potholders
A simple example of circularity and our effort to build a sustainable mindset within the association is the 174 potholders we sewed for the kitchens of the Stavanger Trekking Association (Stavanger Turistforening). The exteriors are made from old cabin curtains and bed linen, while the heat-resistant padding inside comes from worn-out towels donated by our colleagues.
Zero-Waste Repair Kits
One of our favorite zero-waste projects began with a mountain of old life jackets donated by Frilager. We transformed 62 of them into repair kits packed with everything needed to fix clothes and gear on the trail. These kits are now available at all DNT serviced cabins for hikers to use. By turning the life jackets upside down, we utilized the original structure to create as many pockets and smart storage solutions for sewing tools as possible, ensuring absolutely nothing went to waste.
