
How to get to Rondane by bus or train
Rondane is beautifully located between Lillehammer and Dovre. This means that you have many options when you need to find transport and public transport for your trips to Rondane. In this article, you will get an overview of the most used and easily accessible places to start your trip into Rondane.
Otta - for trips from the south
Otta is one of the more central transport hubs to Rondane. With both train and bus connections, this is an ideal starting destination.

From Otta, it is easy to get on to several starting points. Our recommendation is to start the trip at Spranget and Mysusæter. From here it is a short distance to the serviced DNT cabin Rondvassbu.
Summer time
Bus from Otta
There is a bus between Mysusæter, Spranget and Otta several times a day throughout the summer. The bus corresponds with the train departures to Otta, so you travel easily and seamlessly from the train onwards by bus.
From Spranget
From Spranget it is a short distance to Rondvassbu. Here you can either follow the gravel road on foot or rent a bike and pedal into the cabin.

Winter
Transport to Mysusæter from Otta
In winter, you have to take a taxi from Otta up to Mysusæter.
From here it is about 10 km into Rondvassbu where you can continue the trip further into Rondane. The first kilometers are groomed ski trails and further along a marked route to the cabin.
Hjerkinn – for trips from the north
Hjerkinn station is located between two mountain areas, Dovrefjell and Rondane. This is a station with a history dating back to 1921 when the Dovre Line from Dombås to Trondheim was completed. Hjerkinn is a well-known starting point for hikers and invites you to many great short and longer trips.
Today, there are daily departures from Oslo and Trondheim to Hjerkinn Station.

Summer time
Trails from the station
In the summer, you can start your trip right out of the train door. The red-marked trail starts from the station, whether you want to go south into Rondane or north to Dovrefjell.

Winter
Trails from Hjerkinn
In winter, the knotted trails start from Hageseter. It is about 1 hour walk from the station to Hageseter. It is also possible to take a taxi.

Every year, DNT knots many hundreds of kilometers of routes in the mountains. On ut.no you get a full overview of the squares and when they are being limbed.
Straumbu - for trips from the east
Straumbu is a large and nice picnic area east of Rondane. This is the main gateway when you want to go hiking into mountainous areas from the east. There are good parking opportunities here. Parking is free, but be considerate of day visitors when parking.
From Straumbu it is a short distance to Bjørnhollia
By train and bus to Straumbu
It is easy to get to Straumbu by public transport.
Summer time:
Ringebu to Straumbu
To get to Straumbu, the quickest and easiest is to take the train to Ringebu and bus from here to Straumbu. There are daily departures by train and bus from Oslo and Trondheim.
Due to storm Hans in 2023, there will be a bus for trains from Lillehammer to Ringebu in 2024.

To Bjørnhollia
In the summer, there is a short distance (about 6 km) from Straumbu to Bjørnhollia. From Bjørnhollia, Rondane is at your feet and you can walk north towards Dørålseter or further west towards Rondvassbu.
We recommend an extra night at Bjørnhollia so that you can go on the summit hike to Høgronden (2118 masl)
Winter
Public transport from Oslo
In the winter, there is no bus from Ringebu onwards as the road over Venabygdsfjellet is closed in winter.
The road normally opens for the Easter holidays.
Public transport from Trondheim
Train to Koppang, bus on to Furulund or train to Hjerkinn, bus on to Folldal, and Furulund.
