Staying at DNT cabins with your dog

DNT is committed to making nature accessible to everyone, including those who want to bring their four-legged friends on a trip. Therefore, we work actively to facilitate dogs at the DNT cabins. The offer for those who bring a dog is under development, and varies between the different member associations.

Staffed DNT cabins

It is possible to bring dogs to the vast majority of DNT's Staffed cabins.

General rules for serviced cabins:

  • Always ask the manager about where your dog can be placed.
  • Your dog is not allowed in the living room, dining room and bedroom.
  • Most serviced cabins have dog cages in their own rooms.
  • The placement of the dog will vary based on the size of the individual cabin and the possibility of practical adaptation.

Selfservice and no-service cabins

We also continuously facilitate dogs in many of the self- and no-serviced cabins so that it will be possible to have a good experience for both dog and owner.

  • Dog room
A dog room means a separate heated room where both dog and owner can spend the night. This is usually a room in one of the buildings with its own entrance, but can in some cases be a completely separate cabin where dogs are allowed.
  • Cage in a separate room
Cage in an unheated room that is only available for dogs. Here it is not arranged for the owner to sleep with the dog.
  • Cages in outbuildings
Cages in outbuildings mean cages at the disposal of dogs. This is often together with wood, gas etc. in the fuse cabin/outbuilding. Here it is not arranged for the owner to sleep with the dog and the room is not heated.
  • No facilitation
Here it is not possible to bring dogs indoors. Dogs must spend the night outdoors

Service dogs
Service dogs have the right to accompany their handler at all DNT cabins, in accordance with Norwegian law (the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act). Service dogs have access to all areas where the handler has access, including common rooms, bedrooms and other facilities in the cabins. This ensures that people with visual impairments can have the same access to outdoor activities as others.

Overview of cabins adapted for dogs

In total, we have 333 cabins that are open for dogs to stay overnight. Well over 100 of these have their own dog room where dog and owner can sleep together.

Variation among member associations

DNT's member associations have a total of 580 cabins across the country, and each member association is responsible for the operation and guidelines for its own cabins.

- We understand that many people have questions about bringing a dog on a trip to DNT cabins and that it is important to many. We are working to ensure that all cabins have an offer for dogs. At the same time, we must take into account people with allergies so that no one is excluded from spending the night in our cabins, says cabin and route manager at DNT, Torgeir Negaard Berg.

Ad:

Most of the work on the cabins is based on volunteer work. The placement of the dog will vary based on the size of the individual cabin and the possibility of practical adaptation. In some cabins, it is easy to find good solutions with separate rooms or houses for dogs, while it is not as easy elsewhere.

- Most Staffed cabins have dog cages in their own rooms. If you come when there are many other dogs there, it will be the same as when there are many guests. If there is no room in the dog rooms, someone has to sleep elsewhere. If you bring a dog and go for a walk during the high season, the dog may therefore have to sleep in an outbuilding or similar. Most self-service cabins have a dog cage in the security cabin or a separate dog room," says Nergaard Berg.

Check UT.no

At the same time, it is still the case that it pays to check in advance when planning new cabin adventures with your dog.

-  We hope to gain an understanding that full facilitation can take  time. We have over 590 cabins spread across the country. It is both expensive and laborious to take the necessary measures, but when we build new and rehabilitate cabins, it is often better adapted for dogs so that the offer is continuously improved, says Nergaard Berg.

If you want to secure a place in the cabin of your dreams for you and your best friend, we recommend that you check if the cabin has the option of pre-booking a place.

Member associations

You can also contact the association that runs the cabin you plan to visit for more information. Many of the member associations have their own pages with information about how their cabins are arranged:

Something to think about during your stay

Remember that many people can be afraid of calm dogs as well. Keep the dog on a leash at the cabins and also follow the rules for leashing on the way to and from the cabin.

Feel free to bring a familiar blanket the dog is lying on at home. Our dog cages have blankets, but many dogs have slept there before and for many dogs it will feel safer with a familiar smell.

It's easy to spill floors, and maybe walls, after walks in fresh weather. It's no problem – just remember to wash thoroughly after your dog. Feel free to bring your own towel that you dry the dog well with before you go inside. Remember that the dog should not get up in beds and on the sofa.

We also do not have dog food for sale at our cabins, so bring the necessary food for the dog for the entire trip.
